Cleaning Tips – Ketchup Stains

This weekend is Labor Day weekend which means good times and fun with friends and family at the house while enjoying good food and the last holiday weekend of the summer. With all the fun often comes a lot of dirt and stains in the carpet and sometimes that includes ketchup. No doubt many people are going to be grilling up dogs and burgers so the chances of a ketchup stain might be pretty good this weekend. That’s why decided to offer this little step by step tip on how to clean your carpet in the event someone drops their ketchup covered food all over your beautiful carpet.

Step 1 Most people want to immediately grab a rag or paper towel and just starting wiping up when they see ketchup all over the carpet. Don’t do it. You will likely push a lot of the ketchup further into the carpet and accidently make it worse. Instead, grab a spoon and scoop up as much of the ketchup as possible.

Step 2 Grab your laundry detergent and mix about 1/4 teaspoon of the detergent with about 4 cups of water. Grab a towel, dunk it in the detergent and water wring it out to where it damp, not dripping wet.

Step 3 Using the towel; gently blot the area from the outside in. Try and lift the ketchup out of the carpet as opposed to wiping or scrubbing. You don’t need to use a lot of muscle so if you start sweating you’re probably doing something wrong.

Step 4 After you blot with the towel, rinse the area with water. If you have a water bottle, spray some water over the area.

Step 5 Finally, get a dry towel, the thicker the better, and lay it over the area. Take something heavy and place it over the towel. Leave it there for several hours 4-6.

Hopefully, with the steps described above that nasty ketchup stain will come right up. If not, you may need the help of a Utah Carpet Cleaner professional, that’s where we come in. We have lifted the worst ketchup and mustard stains you can imagine. Call us if you need us!
